Luminoso afogado

LUMINOSO AFOGADO by Al Berto is the company's first approach to a Portuguese text and author.  20 years later, director and actress Zia Soares revisits Al Berto, with whom she was working at the time of his death on the adaptation and staging of a text by the author, “Lunário” - the show would later be called “O Canto do Noitibó”. Zia Soares was working on his first play and Al Berto was working on his last artistic project.

LUMINOSO AFOGADO is a kind of shadow line, where in a confrontation with the mirror, with death and with the passage of time, someone doesn't recognize himself, he is between being what he is and another unrecoverable and absent.

Spectres break down the barrier between the living and the dead, re-establishing links with languages reconfigured from others, sung, mourned, silent.

A place where “silence is definitive”, where one oscillates between memory and the most absolute oblivion. A dive where you hold your breath in another time, another place.

The set/figurine is a sculptural object built from used fishing nets, which are always donated by fishermen from the region where the show is performed.

The nets that make up the sculptural object weave in harmony and disharmony with the actors' voices and movements, sometimes transfiguring into a shapeless and beautiful dress, sometimes into a dark and grotesque sea.

Two years after its premiere in Lisbon at the Teatro da Trindade, the show was presented in Africa, as part of the Mindelact Festival 2018 program in Cape Verde. This move implied a reconfiguration of this territory, proving essential a new look that embraced another language, another speech, Creole, itself a reconfiguration of others.

Ruy Filho, Brazilian critic for Antro Positivo magazine

“In Luminoso Afogado, Al Berto exists dead and also as death, history and present, memory and response. We witness the recognition of death itself and its uninterrupted movement.”
